To Ban Or Not To Ban

I was embroiled in a debate the other night about Trump’s Muslim ban. I took the anti-ban position. My friend was more pro, and he explained his worry, or belief, was that Muslims would come and overtake this country, install Sharia Law and all other horror stories. First, there are already millions of Muslims in this country now and I haven’t heard of any extremist movements, and I am fairly certain that would make the news somewhere. I also doubt it would play out like that because honestly, do you think the Muslims can outpace the Latinos? The Latino population is set to become the majority in the not so distant future, and even still there will still be other races represented as well and I think our system of government is strong enough to deflect any extremist groups, other than Trump himself, clearly.

Now, I’m not a  bleeding heart begging everyone to think about our Muslim brothers and sisters, but I am saying there’s nothing to be gained with this ban. It’s a piece of totally ineffectual legislation. The bad people are going to come no matter what. They’ll just find another way; and let’s just say Trump gets his way and bans all Muslims. Then what? America is safe forever and we all live happily ever after in a mushroom field? Who will be the next threat to the American way of life? Who’s next on Trump’s hit list? When will this ever end? There is a problem here, but the ban is just a poorly applied band aid. This issue needs to be rooted out on a deeper level and singling out one section of the populace isn’t doing the job.

I was called a ‘white apologist’ for this point of view and while I take exception to it, I think maybe we white folks have a lot to apologize for; if you’ll pardon a brief digression at this point. America is a great nation, but it is not perfect and it has its share of blood on its ‘hands’.  Let’s just be honest okay? First, the ancestors of the Anglo Saxon ascendants- the Puritans, came to this land to escape religious  persecution. Let’s not forget this was ‘illegal immigration’. Of course there were no immigration laws back then, but still, if we’re going to be detailed about this,  it was illegal immigration. Once they landed here, they started persecuting. I guess it wasn’t so much that they hated the persecution, but rather they wanted to be doing the persecuting. They fought the natives and took the land by force and intimidation. They slaughtered the natives and expanded their colonies all in the name of their God. Then they sailed to Africa, kidnapped natives from there and brought them here to enslave and treat as cattle. After a bloody war, the Africans were freed, but still seen as sub-human by a good portion of the country. Then for decades after that, they fought for every right they enjoy today. They had to fight just to be seen as human beings, for God’s sake! Repeat this cycle with every other minority group. Remember the internment camps during WWII? Japanese Americans will  never forget. Has singling out one portion of society EVER solved anything? No. It has always caused more problems and for all this, I think we, as Americans owe the world many apologies. To stand upon our history and delude ourselves into believing everything was done for noble reasons is to openly deny the truth. America’s origins was not some altruistic endeavor, but it included a systematic genocide, enslavement of foreign races and flat out discrimination.

You’d think after all these centuries we’d be better. You’d think we would have learned our lessons but there are still people out there who would rather find simple answers and pick one person or group of people to blame for all the ills of the world. Someone to relieve them of the responsibility that the mess they find themselves in now is of their own making. I think the truly American thing to do is to own up and face the truth. Swaddling yourself in lies only breeds ignorance and hostility. I’m not claiming to know the solution myself, but so far as I’ve seen, this ban is only making things worse and since three of the countries not listed on the  ban are where the terrorists are known to be coming from, I really don’t see how the ban as it is now is going to be effective. This was clearly a power move by a president who knows he has no mandate but insists on flexing his power to put his ‘enemies’ in their place. Instead he’s only firing them up to fight harder. I know Hillary wasn’t a lot of people’s first choice, but no matter what you think of her, there is no way we would be in this quagmire  had she won the electoral vote. I can’t say if we’d be worse off or better off. There’s no way to know, but if these  past 3 weeks are a sample of what the next 4 years are going to be like, I think anything else would be a big improvement.

Why Him? (Not the movie)

Okay. So my mind is mingled with many issues right now. First, I’m moved by the story about the man who told Ivanka Trump her father was ruining the country and then was removed from the flight along with his husband and child. There’s the short version. Let’s being: Since when would a Trump be caught dead traveling on a commercial airline, and in coach no less! Feels to me that she was baiting people into a confrontation just so it could get the kind of press it has been getting. In this instance I side with the hero who had the guts to speak his mind and shame on the airline for backing Ivanka. Her father is ruining this country. Hell, her whole damn family is chipping away at the U.S. My big issue here is the amount of threats of physical violence this man and his family have received. He  simply spoke his opinion. He didn’t threaten her or anything. Just stated his opinion, which according to the Constitution is his right. You can disagree with him, but to hurl threats of violence seems like a disproportionate response. It’s disturbing to me how so many Trump supporters are so quick to such anger. Of course, I would also say suck it up. You bitches have been ragging on Obama and his family for 8 years. Now it’s your turn. How dare anyone on the Right say anything about this incident. The insults I’ve heard thrown at the Obamas pale in comparison to what poor little Ivanka went through. I guess it’s different when it’s your guy in the White House right? When you disrespect Obama, it’s okay, but God forbid you speak against Trump. Screw Trump and his whole brood. They are the worst family since the Mansons. Hey! There’s an idea. Charlie in 2020, right? The fact of the  matter is you cannot expect after 8 years of degrading our president that we’re going to just embrace Trump and treat him with any kind of respect, and for you to whine like children when he or his ‘family’ are confronted in public just shows how pitiful you are. The classic ‘you can dish it out, but you can’t take it’ comes to mind. That’s just too bad. Get used to it for the next 4 years. (And if you think Trump is going to be a 2 termer, you really are an idiot.)

Now, what else? Oh. Right. The Right urging us to get behind Trump and support ‘our’ President. Just like they supported Obama? It’s amazing how the Republicans don’t see how their actions can affect how they are treated. They think they can treat everyone like dirt and still expect to be treated like royalty. We should respect him because he won the election? Because the people voted for him? No. He won in part from interference from Russia (17 Intelligence agencies confirming this is good enough for me) He also won because he mobilized the disenfranchised of this country who have felt left behind. He appealed to their fears and hatred and it lit a fire in them. They saw him as their hero. He would save them from, uh, something. Not sure what, but Trump is going to save them, or at least he promised he would. So far, he hasn’t held up his end of the bargain. That swamp is getting bigger and deadlier by the day. Where’s that wall? When do all the Muslims get taken away? When is any of that going to happen? Never. That’s when! Never! He  is going to use his position to fill his pockets every chance he gets at the cost of this country. His bff Putin is going to hold his hand all along the way too. Trump took the White House because he sold them what they wanted, but they should have looked in the package first. I think another element was simply because most Repubs are just dumb. I mean, they are. They’re leaders tell them to vote for someone and they show up in force, no questions asked and vote. Democrats are a little too smart for their own good because you tell them who to vote for and they think it over. Over-think it, in fact. Another aspect is, and this is also just a theory, that most voters don’t like smart candidates. They resent them, or envy them; not sure. It just seems the candidates who get the furthest are the ones who pander to the lowest common denominator. The ones who think and explain and give sound reasoning for their decisions are attacked and demonized. I think it’s time the people put on their ‘big boy’ pants and accept that most of us don’t know everything and that there are people out there who have experience and knowledge about things we know nothing about. I don’t know jack squat about foreign policy, I admit that and I would gladly allow better minds than mine take the wheel. To be blinded by your own pride because of your own anger over your limitations is pointless. Now Trump is in charge and he’s pissing off China, buddying up with Russia and is so in love with himself he can’t see what he’s really doing because of all the folks insulating him from the truth.

Also, why are the other Repubs afraid of him? No Republicans on Capitol Hill have the guts to slap that orange baby like he  needs to be. They seem to fear his supporters lashing out at them if they speak against the Donald. Do they fear physical attacks or are they just afraid of nasty letters and tweets? If that’s the case, I’d tell them to grow the fuck up. Absorbing the hate of those who disagree with you is part of your job, which you get paid insanely well for btw. Just ask Obama. He and his family have spent 8 scandal free years in the White House, yet for some reason I don’t think any Presidential family has endured more scorn than they have. (He saved the economy, got Bin Laden, insured America and they say the country is in shambles. Now we get to hear about how Trump has inherited a financial disaster from Obama, yet in the same breath they try to take the credit for the improved economy.)

Bottom line here is Karma is a bitch, Repubs and you’re fools if you expect to receive anything more than the exact same treatment you gave to Obama during his administration. All the obstructions, all the backstabbing and jabs. All of that will be coming home to roost for you. Stop acting like you’re surprised or that you don’t deserve it. Did you really think 8  years of acting as you have would hold no consequences? I know. You ‘know’ that you’re right and because of that we need to bow down and obey, right? No. It doesn’t work like that. It never has, it never will, and so far you haven’t been right. About anything. I realize the Democrats are no angels, but at least when they fight they try to fight for others. You only ever fight for yourselves. I’ll close this rant with one quick little history lesson. 1928. Republican President, Senate and House. 1929 Great Depression. Repeat again with George W Bush. Great Recession. Now we have Trump and a Right controlled House and Congress. What financial catastrophe is coming? It’s only a matter of waiting now.

NC GOP Revolt(ing)

So, McCRory finally conceded his defeat, but now the Repubs are pulling another shenanigan. Trying to strip incoming Governor Cooper of nearly all his power so they can retain control. They say they’re doing it because the legislature is closer to the people than the Governor, yet this argument wasn’t made when McCrory was in office. I think the party has finally and completely gone over the deep end. They, the party that constantly sings about how they love America and all that jazz, are now making one of the boldest moves to completely upend democracy. The people don’t want HB2 and they don’t want McCrory. They voted him out and voted Cooper in. Put on the big boy pants and suck it up. It’s amazing to me every time they lose, instead of examining their positions on the issues, they instead try to change the system to suit their interests. They need to be stopped because if this gambit succeeds, it will set a dangerous precedent for the entire country. The chain of command must be respected and if other states see that they can literally take away the power from the elected officials and take the reigns of power away by force, it will spell the end of America as we know it.

When did the Republican party become such a bunch of whiny little children? Always throwing these hissy fits each time they lose. It’s sickening and we  have to put our collective foot down and demand an end to this childish behavior. They system only works when we all play by the same rules, but somehow Republicans have gotten it into their heads that there’s a different set of rules for them. Which of course there aren’t. If I could address them directly I would tell them the reason they keep losing is because their policies are out of touch with the real world. They keep choosing to stay on the opposite side of progress. They preach this false morality they expect the world to live by, yet they themselves don’t.

Trump seems to have ushered in a new era of corruption. Maybe that’s why they defend him so much. As long as he’s on top, they think they can get away with anything. I don’t know what kind of world they are looking to live in, but I can’t imagine that it will be all that great, based on the issues they fight for. I see for them a world where all minorities are subjugated, the environment is expendable, and all the wealthy live in a beautiful Utopian city while the rest of the country struggles as they serve their rich masters. How that is a sustainable future, I have no idea. They want to rule us rather than legislate. We are not here to serve them, but rather they are here to work for us. No matter the title, from the bottom of the barrel to the top of the ladder, they are and always will be civil servants. It’s time they started acting like it.

Last Word Before Election

Finally, almost over. It seems like this election has gone on forever. Never has it been so divisive and toxic. Lie flying through the air and mud flung like never before. The hate and evil raised up from Trump has awakened a sleeping giant and has mobilized a lot of very scary people who were probably best left to their rest.

My final observations of this election cycle will not be polite. They will  not be measured. I’m jut freaking annoyed! First, I support Hillary. Like many, MANY people do. Every bad thing I hear about her, and I have heard it all since Bill’s tenure in the White House, fail to hold up to good old fashioned research. Read an article. Engage. Everything you hear about the Clintons, come from people who don’t know them, weren’t there when whatever went down went down, and usually just heard it from some drunk talk at the urinal, or worse, Fox News. 25 years of investigations and nothing has been found. Which means she’s either innocent of the charges or she is so smart she has avoided prosecution in the face of these endless probes; in which case I feel it makes her an even better candidate. To do that is the act of a genius, because no one has ever done it before in the history of this country.

People say they don’t like her because she’s dishonest. She’s a politician. Of course she’s dishonest, but only about 28% of the time. The rest of the time she is truthful. Trump however has been proven to be dishonest over 80% of the time. He even lied about something he said on live television barely an hour after saying it. Everything that Hillary is accused of, Trump is also guilty of, more so  in a lot of cases. The only difference is he really is guilty and she is only believed to be guilty.

I have seen smart  people turn into complete idiots during this election. Trump supporters will rationalize ANYTHING. He could release a video of him screwing  a mother and her under age daughter and they will just say he’s promoting family values. I think defending him actually destroyed brain cells, by the estimation of his supporters. A panelist on a talk show also claimed that Trump does indeed pay his bills. No, he doesn’t. I have read countless stories of contractors he has left high and dry. He simply thinks he doesn’t have to pay if he doesn’t want to. He then gets his Trump Foundation to funnel in some money for himself. Of all the crap that man has  pulled, why is none of it reported? It’s verifiable, it’s proven and it’s real, but no. Maybe you say things he said 10 years ago have no bearing now. Okay. Then why are Hillary’s words from the past fair game? If you’re going to play by those rules, you have to expect the other side to play by them as well. It doesn’t really matter I guess. It doesn’t matter how much you tear away at Hillary. No matter how bad you make her look, it will never make Trump a better candidate. She could commit murder on national television and I would still proudly vote for her over Trump. Let’s talk about his Russian ties. Let’s talk about his Bromance with Putin. Let’s talk about his outrage over foreign powers,  such as China, yet check out where the clothes that bear his brand are made. CHINA! God damn it people! What’s it going to take for you to see him for what he really is!? The quick facts are Hillary IS qualified. She is not guilty of any wrong doing. What she did many other politicians before her, including George Bush and Reagan, also did. In fact, under Bush Jr, there was a higher body count when it came to embassy attacks. Millions of emails deleted. Tell me how Hillary’s emails mean anything compared to that.

If you’re voting for that man, you are stupid. Flat out. His policies are ridiculous. They are the stuff of Saturday morning cartoons, only the joke will be on us. That wall will never get built, and  if it does, it won’t be done until long after his first term is over. This is all an ego trip for him. Can you really see that man up at 4 in the morning dealing with an international crisis? Him in the Situation Room? He will go right for the nukes, you know it. I know a lot of his supporters love him for that, but those are the real idiots. I have seen these people and got a sample of how they think and deplorable doesn’t even cover it. They must all live on a steady diet of Red Bull and lead paint chips. Whenever they speak I just want to slap them and tell them to shut the hell  up! They base all their beliefs on the words of Fox news and all the other Conservative pundits who, despite their intelligence, bend over backwards to defend and boost up this nightmare of a human being.

Basically, if you aren’t voting for Hillary because you just don’t like her, you should still vote for her. You’re not voting for your new best friend. You’re voting to put someone who is tough, smart, diplomatic and strong enough to face the challenges this country poses in the seat of the president. She may be a bitch. So what? As Tina Fey once said, bitches get s**t done! (paraphrasing). All these calls to impeach her on day one and plans to hit her with constant investigations should she win are ridiculous. It’s actually almost treasonous to plot like that about your president. Openly stating you will not participate in your own duties because of that candidate.

Trump will lose, but in a sense he has won. He has empowered  an army of racist, inbred immature idiots and Nazis. Literally. If you are with Trump, you are aligning with honest to God Nazis. A simple Google search of Hillary’s accomplishments will show you how effective she is and how hard she works. The fact that the FBI has investigated her seven ways from Sunday but still found nothing to prosecute her on should be enough. She and Bill aren’t rich or powerful enough to escape that kind of scrutiny. I don’t know. It just seems like such an obvious choice here. If you prefer to believe heresay, lies and baseless accusations, you’re a Trumper, and you are literally what’s wrong with this country.

Let’s just get to the 8th, get Hillary elected and maybe then we can go about the business of living once more.

Let’s Get Political

I’m trying to stay away from political posts, because they aren’t much fun, I know. I just have to break and put one more up. I was thinking about our country and how it’s set up in a way that virtually nothing ever can be accomplished. If one side has a great idea to make real change, the other side finds fault and does everything to stop it. Think about it. How much has our government really accomplished after 2 centuries? There have been victories here and there, but the big battles still loom. Healthcare. Tax reform. Immigration reform. Civil rights. It seems to never end. We have had these problems on our plate for decades upon decades and not only have they not gotten better, they’ve actually grown worse. Why? Well, here’s a theory of mine, but it makes a lot of  sense to me. Because our government has grown fat and lazy and complacent. I’m not talking just Republicans or Democrats. This isn’t a party issue. This is a politician issue. If you are reading this, please just humor me and think about these issues. Really think about it. You are aware that most congressmen and senators are millionaires/billionaires, right? When it comes to issues of health care, what do they have to say about anything? It’s not an issue that they have to deal with. First, they already have insurance from the government; AKA us! We are paying for their care.  We pay their salaries, despite the fact they make millions in the private sector. Those guys are never going to  have to deal with the reality of healthcare like we do because they can afford the best of care for the rest of their lives. How can they effectively legislate when they have no idea what it’s like to be in our shoes? Simple answer is they can’t. I don’t care what sob story they may have about how they worked their way up from humble beginnings. Where ever they came from doesn’t matter. Right now they are wealthy and over-privileged. Why do we allow wealthy men and women to rule over us like they were kings? Why do we allow this to go on? I think in ways we’ve also become complacent. We don’t fight like we used to. We roll over when we see the injustice and just accept that we can’t fight city hall, but that’s wrong. We can fight. We only have to choose to.

My broad plan would be simple. Take it all away. No more salaries for any congress members who make more than fifty thousand a year in the private sector. No more health benefits. They have to go and get their own insurance through the ACA just like everyone else in this country. Those who sit upon the seat of power have an obligation to live like their constituents. How else would they know their struggle? How would they know what they need? What they want? Any one who really cares about doing the job of running this country would accept these terms. Our politicians should not live above us in their ivory towers, seemingly immune to the same standards we are all  held to. They need to be part of our communities. They need to be us.

Where is our power BTW? They can hand down laws to tell us what to do, but where is our power to tell them no? Where is our voice? We get to vote every four years? Is that it? NO! The only way to get real change in the government would be to employ the ideas outlined above. That’s the only way they would ever care; if they were impacted as well. I’m tired of being told how to live by some exclusive club of millionaires. I wish there was some other way to make this endless waltz end, but there really isn’t. The only way we’d see real change would be to cut the purse strings and force them all to live in the real world with the rest of us. If you are reading this and agree, at least on the concept of this post, pass it along. Share it. Wake up the people! We do have a voice and we can be heard but only until we all speak together! Think about what I’ve said. Really think about it. How okay are you with a bunch of old, rich men sitting on Capitol Hill in their wood paneled offices with their personal staffs, making up the laws of the land not for the good of the people, but for the good of their contributors? Maybe this is a cynical and oversimplified view, but the fact is ‘Money talks. Bullshit walks’. Most people never find a ‘side’ to an argument until after they’ve been impacted by the problem. These politicians can’t legislate because they don’t know what it is to be  us. To be a paycheck away from losing your home. To sacrificing more than you can bare to keep food on the table and your young ones healthy and happy. They have nannies and personal assistants. They have snot nosed college kids lining up around the corner to be their interns, also known as academic slaves. This is wrong! They are civil servants. They are here to serve us, not the other way around. If you’re not one of ‘them’ then great. Happy for you, but the fact is most of Congress and the Senate work like this and everyone knows it. It’s just about time that we all did something about it.

New NRA Ad

Okay, I’m trying to keep my blog light, but I just saw a new ad by the NRA with some woman who got raped talking about how she was afraid of guns before she was attacked and now has seen ‘the light’ and has become a gun advocate. She claims that the right to bear arms is at risk in this election. First off, No it isn’t. Hillary is not after your precious guns anymore than Obama was. All that is being offered are some common sense gun safety laws that would keep military grade weaponry off the streets, close up the gun show loophole and enact more stringent background checks before the purchase of guns. I honestly don’t know what the NRA’s objections to these guidelines are. So much opposition to common sense laws that will keep everyone safe. If you’re on the no-fly list, why should you be allowed to have a gun. Too dangerous to fly but it’s A-OK for you to have a gun? I also don’t understand why the NRA makes such a leap in logic. Gun safety laws = taking our rights away to them. I get that they’re trying to hold onto their grip on our law makers. They don’t want to give up their power and if any gun safety measures ever get through, it’ll be a downward slide for them. They will lose their clout and the ability to control our congressmen and senators, but I think that would be good. Most of them are a bunch of uneducated, paranoid reactionary freaks who for their guns before thinking.  Is that the world we want? Do we want to go back to the wild west? Gun fight in the streets? Daily mass shootings? How many dead will it take before the NRA sees that something has to be done in order to protect the people? We need driver’s licenses to drive cars. Why not apply that to guns? Regular testing. Annual registrations. Keep on top of those out there who are carrying around tools of death, because that’s what they are. Guns are designed to kill and only kill. Anyone who really believes in gun safety should agree that these measures are not violations of their rights and are completely reasonable methods by which to ensure public safety. We are not animals ruled by our fear. We have the ability to reason and think. There also other methods of self defense. Pepper spray. Tazers. Basic self defense. I’d like to know what would have happened to that woman if she did have a gun and her rapist found it. Then you’d be raped and killed. A gun does not guarantee safety. In fact, its presence increases your chance of death. You think it won’t happen to you. You know better. There are plenty of people buried who thought just like you do. The average gun owner may be willing to bet their life on that weapon, but I’m not, and my life isn’t yours to wager on.
